Cemetery information by members of the Jacksonville Area
Genealogical and Historical Society
A parcel of land behind the Gov. Duncan mansion on West State Street
was deeded as a cemetery. The land now is incorporated in the deed for
the property at 1009 West Lafayette Avenue. It is not certain if any burials
were ever made in this cemetery. Gov. Duncan was for a time buried in front
of the mansion, near West State Street. His body now is considered to be
buried in Diamond Grove Cemetery, contrary to often denied rumors that
medical students at Illinois College stole his body for study. City records
show that the family was moved to Diamond Grove in May of 1873.
