Cemetery transcription by members of the Jacksonville Area
Genealogical and Historical Society
Berkey (perhaps misspelled) was situated on the southwest
corner of North Church and West Walnut streets in Jacksonville. Walter
Vernon Opperman, who lived in the neighborhood as a child and young man,
remembers playing amongst the tombstones. When the house at 987 North Church
was built, it is reported that a coffin was found while digging the basement.
During the late 1950s and until about 1972 the site of the cemetery was
a tangle of brush around what appeared to be a brick foundation. About
1972 the area was bulldozed and is in 1974 a flat, grassy, empty lot, with
many remnants of broken stones and concrete scattered.
